Davo Hickey (’17) has been selected in the Australian senior squad for the first time for this month’s FIBA Asia Cup basketball qualifiers.

The Illawarra Hawks guard hopes to make his Boomers debut against Thailand on November 21 or hosts Korea three days later in qualifiers for next year’s tournament in Saudi Arabia.

The Wiradjuri and Gamilaroi/Gomeroi man has been rewarded for a strong start to the season for the NBL1-leading Hawks, averaging 8.9 points per game on 50 per cent shooting, alongside 4.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.3 steals.

The 25-year-old Trinitarian is one of four Hawks to make the squad.

His selection came after he signed a three-year deal to stay with the Illawarra team.

“It’s the first extended contract in my career, so it feels like all that hard work, all that sacrifice over all those years, has been worth it,” said the 194cm guard.

Coach Justin Tatum said: “His passion is there for everyone to see, and the team loves that just like the fans do.

“He has worked tirelessly to prove himself not only to me but to his teammates. I can rely on him to do his job and he is really contributing to our current success.”
