Dr Daniel Nour (’13) has become the first Australian to win one of the annual humanitarian awards from the Kentucky-based Muhammad Ali Centre.
The former Young Australian of the Year was honoured for his work in founding Street Side Medics, the charity which takes health services to the homeless.
“I think every young person at some stage has listened to Muhammad Ali’s speeches and been inspired. He’s definitely someone that inspired me,” he said.
Muhammad Ali’s wife, Lonnie Ali, is involved in selecting the winners on behalf of the not-for-profit organisation she founded in the boxing great’s name in 2005.
Street Side Medics has grown rapidly into an organisation staffed by some 600 volunteer GPs, physiotherapists and nurses in less than four years.
It operates from 12 medical vans across NSW and plans to open soon in Melbourne.
Dr Nour has completed his exams for the Royal Australian College of Physicians, and will start as a cardiology advanced trainee at Royal North Shore Hospital next year.
