The School is saddened to acknowledge the passing of Darrell Maxwell (Max) Taylor AM (26 Feb 1923 – 30 Sep 2025).
Mr Max Taylor commenced working at Trinity Grammar School in Term 3 1945, early in the Headmastership of James Wilson Hogg. Initially teaching in the first ‘Junior School’ – that branch of the Preparatory School that was temporarily located at Summer Hill – Mr Taylor primarily taught History from 1945 until 1987. At that point he retired from classroom teaching and took up the role of the Convenor of the Society of the Arts and the Curator of the Delmar Gallery from 1988 until his retirement in 2002.
Mr Taylor’s leadership in the creative arts at Trinity over these decades was remarkable in its scope and impact. He led the acquisition of the School’s art collection, he founded the Society of the Arts, and he established the Delmar Gallery both in its original premises and in its current purpose-built facility. The benefits of his work were, and are, felt both by Trinity students and the wider community. As Headmaster Rod West wrote in 1976: ‘It was James Wilson Hogg who had the vision glorious and it was Max Taylor who transformed that vision into a wonderful reality.’
The School understands that the funeral will be held in St James Anglican Church, King St, Sydney. More information will be provided in due course.
