Renewal Project – June review

Teaching & Learning Building
Teaching & Learning Building

As Term 2 comes to an end, there has been lots of work to prepare for the school holidays – when the campus is void of students, it can be a very productive time for the Renewal Project.

Here’s a quick run through of the lay of the land as we head towards the winter break. If you love numbers and construction, this is the update for you!

Three of the six basement levels’ scheduled pours have been completed over the last two weeks, with the next three projected to be completed during the holidays.

New changing rooms and shower block spaces have been created, with the blockwork walls coming along nicely.

Two lift shaft bases have now been poured and are being formed up ready for the walls to be poured throughout the holidays.

In two weeks, work on the next floor level (ground floor) will commence, which will include formwork. Timber, trestles, steel reinforcement, post-tension cables, services, and concrete. There are three scheduled concrete pours for this level, with the first pour at the end of July.

The new Teaching & Learning building, by the numbers:

  • 62 x shoring piles around the perimeter, standing at 8.5m depth (avg) and a combination of 600mm + 750mm diameter
  • 11,062 tonnes of spoil removed
  • 2345m2 footprint, with an excavation depth of 2.62m on average
  • 42 tonne capacity of a ‘truck and dog’ – 260 truck and dog loads removed from site
  • 310m3 of concrete used in all foundation and shoring piles. Based on 2.4T/m3 density, this equates to 745 tonnes of concrete.
  • 4390m3 of concrete forecast for the entire Teaching & Learning project, equating to 10,536 tonnes of concrete.
  • A single concrete truck delivers 8m3 of concrete.
  • 500 tonnes of steel reinforcement forecast for the Teaching & Learning structure – approximately 352km laid end-to-end, which would reach to Bega or Port Macquarie!
