Obituaries

It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of Robin James Helby, who matriculated from Trinity Grammar School in 1955.

Robin was a boarder who excelled academically and also displayed prowess as a tough opponent on the Rugby field and in the pool on the Water Polo team.

After finishing school, Robin obtained a Bachelor of Science in Geology, a Master of Science in Palynology, and a PhD in Palynology from the University of Sydney, after receiving various scholarships and studying in Germany. He established a consultancy business in 1973, the first of its kind, and completed groundbreaking work on palynological zonation, which became an industry standard. Considered a pioneer in the industry, his dedication to his chosen profession is illustrated by his extensive publication record, with numerous papers.

Robin was highly regarded in his field and, having mentored most of the palynologists in Australia, was described in his eulogy as an expert in his field and a consultant to consultants worldwide. He was later recognised for his achievements, being awarded the Lewis G. Weeks Medal in 2003 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of petroleum exploration and production in Australia. In 2005, he was awarded the Medal of Scientific Excellence by the American Association of Strategic Palynologists.

Robin often spoke fondly of his time at Trinity and continued to maintain many friendships with former classmates until his death.
