City To Surf legend Geoff Kennett (’62), known to his friends and fellow runners as “Superman”, has died aged 79.
Born in Petersham, he was a Trinity boy for all his school years, beginning in the Prep School and staying until the Leaving Certificate in 1962.
He was a First XI cricketer at Trinity where he once took 10 wickets for 20 runs against Knox in 1962.
He played first grade cricket, catching the eye of NSW selectors as a left-arm quick, but fell in love with surfing and went on to represent North Cronulla.
He became a City To Surf legend, joining a select group of just 20 people to run in 50 consecutive events.
He moved to Crescent Head in northern NSW in the early 1980s and continued running in numerous marathons, triathlons, Iron Man races, and fun runs.
In a tribute in federal parliament, Nationals MP for Cowper Pat Conaghan said: “He generously shared his time, knowledge, and compassion in training local athletes.
“Those who knew him referred to him as Superman.
“Geoff’s footsteps will be missed on the road to Bondi, the beaches of Crescent Head, and by his loving wife Bobbie, son Matt, family and many friends.”
